How are you funded? Do my taxes pay for the shelter?

No. The Tama County Humane Society is a private nonprofit organization funded entirely through donations and fundraising efforts.

We do not receive city, state, or federal tax dollars, United Way funds, or support from national humane organizations.

The animals in our care rely solely on your generous support.

Where do your animals come from?
Most of the animals in our care are voluntarily surrendered by their owners.

We frequently receive:

Entire litters of unwanted puppies and kittens

Stray animals

Pets rescued from neglect or abuse

You’ll often find purebred animals as well as lovable mixed breeds available for adoption.
Why do people surrender their animals? Is something wrong with them?
In most cases, there is nothing wrong with the animals.

People surrender pets for many reasons:

No longer able or willing to care for them

Lifestyle changes or housing restrictions

Unplanned litters due to not spaying/neutering

Many of these pets are healthy and simply in need of a second chance.
Do you accept animals other than cats and dogs?
How long do animals stay at your facility? Do you euthanize to make room for more?
